Habitat for Humanity International, established in 1976, is a not for profit, ecumenical Christian organization dedicated to eliminating substandard housing and homelessness worldwide and to making adequate, affordable shelter a matter of conscience and action. Their ministry is founded on the conviction that every man, woman and child should have a simple, decent place to live in dignity and safety. Habitat has an open-door policy: All who desire to be a part of this work are welcome, regardless of religious preference or background. They have a policy of building with people in need regardless of race or religion. They welcome volunteers and supporters from all backgrounds. Future homeowners contribute 500 hours of the labour, known as "sweat equity", towards the construction of their own homes in lieu of a financial down payment and then repay a long-term, no-interest mortgage. Mortgage costs are kept low by the use of volunteer labour and the generous donations of funds and building materials.
Internationally, Habitat has built more than 200,000 homes in over 100 countries around the world. It is currently the goal of the Canadian segment of Habitat to be building 500 homes per year across Canada. Of course, built into the funding of each home erected within Canada is a contribution or tithe to international projects. Specifically within the city of Hamilton, Habitat for Humanity has been undertaking building projects since 1991. Stories of some of the Hamilton projects are featured on the Habitat for Humanity, Hamilton, website.
Of course, there are a variety of ways in which individuals and congregations can contribute to these Habitat projects. However, one of Habitat Hamilton's current fundraising projects offers local congregations a way to take a first step in becoming involved with Habitat for Humanity. Habitat Hamilton is attempting to operate two musical concerts per year in the Hamilton area to serve as informational and fundraising events solely for Habitat Hamilton's current building project. Hosting congregations provide a venue, arrange the hospitality, and help organize and promote the concert. The performers provide their services without charge. The financial proceeds of the event then go to support Habitat Hamilton projects and Habitat also benefits from an increased community awareness of who they are and what they do. This program has become known as "Voices for Habitat."
Anyone wishing further information about Habitat Hamilton or who would like to discuss how their congregation might be involved in one of these promotional concerts is invited to contact the Rev. Anna Chen (annachenon@295.ca) who has personal experience in making these things happen.
