West Flamboro Continues 175th. Anniversary Celebrations

Dr. Hans Kouwenberg, Moderator of the 133rd General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in Canada (2007), was the guest speaker to share in special 175th. anniversary celebrations at West Flamboro Presbyterian Church on Sunday, November 25th. He is pictured to the left with the Rev. Stephen Jenvey, recently inducted minister of West Flamboro.

It was a particularly pleasing occasion for Steve Jenvey and his wife Sandy. Dr. Kouwenberg is a former minister and longtime personal friend. He conducted their wedding service and baptized their two children when they resided in Prince George, BC.

The occasion was also a celebrative time for Dr Kouwenberg's family as well. His father and three of his brothers were able to be present to share in the luncheon following the service.

The West Flamboro congregation has been sharing in a variety of anniversary celebrations throughout the fall season.

The children of the West Flamboro congregation also shared in a special event on the weekend. With their parents and grandparents, friends and families, they participated in a "Making Advent Special" program on Saturday. They shared in the story and the songs of the Advent/Christmas season and assembled their own nativity figures. Pictured below is one of the younger members of the West Flamboro Church community sharing in those activities

Prominent Burlington Artist, Gery Puley, featured at Burlington Art Centre

(Sept 24/07) "Gery Puley has spent her life creating. As an artist, a teacher, a mentor, a world traveler, and one of the driving forces behind the dream of the Burlington Art Centre, she has achieved professional success and generously shared her talents to enrich this community." Those are the opening words in a publicaton produced by the Burlington Art Centre to accompany the exhibition entitled "GERY PULY: a life in art." Now an octogenarian and coping with a loss of vision, her works radiate life and vitality. Her mastery of the medium of watercolour is reflected in this display of about 100 works that represent an impressive breadth of subject and theme. Her works include heritage buildings, floral paintings, landscapes and works that capture the essence from about twenty different countries in the world where she has travelled and painted.

Her exhibition at the Burlington Art Centre continues until November 13th., including an artist reception on October 14th and a tour and talk by the artist on November 4th. (For details call the Art Centre at 905-632-7796). Gery Puley was named Burlington's Citizen of the Year in 1987 and is a member of Knox Church in Burlington. However, we commend her exhibition to anyone who can manage to attend not because of her Presbyterian ties but because of the wonder and beauty that flow from the excellence of her work.

West Flamboro Celebrates its 175th. Anniversay

Celebrations began with the enveiling of a historic plaque on the site of the Congregation on Sunday, September 16th.

New Historic marker unveiled at Christie's Corners

The photo above was taken following the ceremony and includes Mayor Fred Eisenberger (r.) who, along with Eleanor and Harold Gairdner and Ward 14 Councillor Robert Pasuta (l.) shared in the unveiling. Eleanor was baptized in the West Flamboro Church in 1915 and represented the third generation in her family to be baptized in that church.

The plaque reads as follows:

West Flamboro, Christie's Corners
Organized worship was first held in the Flamboro school house opposite the present church in 1825. George Sheed, licentiate of the Church of Scotland, tutored the children of the Honourable James Crooks of Crook's Hollow and conducted Sunday services for settlers. He organized a two-point pastoral charge of Flamboro and Ancaster in connection with the Synod of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland from 1827 until his death in 1832.

Thomas Christie arrived from the Orkney Islands in 1832 under authority of the United Associate Synod of the Secession Church of Scotland. Families from the former Kirk body joined the new congregation of West Flamboro in 1832, purchased land for five shillings, and built a wooden church which seated two hundred. Flamboro was erected as part of a multi-point charge that included Little Scotland (Kirkwall), Beverly Township and St. George, Dumfries Township.

The present church on Lot 1, Concession 1 of West Flamboro Township was built in 1866 and dedicated the following year. The adjacent manse was constructed in 1868 from plans procured by Thomas Christie when in Scotland. Following the 1925 church union vote, the congregation joined with the Presbyterian congregations of Sheffield and Kirkwall as a three-point charge until 1955, when the tie was dissolved and West Flamboro became a single self-supporting congregation. Later additions to the sanctuary were completed in 1958 and 1986.

For thirty-eight years, Reverend Thomas Christie faithfully served the Flamboro area. The community honoured his memory by naming the site of his labours, Christie's Corners.

The West Flamboro Congregation is also celebrating the arrival of a new Minister. The Rev. Stephen Jenvey was ordained and inducted as Minister of the congregation on September 5th.

Sunday, September 23rd. People arrived for worship at West Flamboro Church by various modes of transportation out of the past including on horesback and in vintage cars and trucks. The Rev. Ted Hicks, who had been Minister of the congregation from 1979-82 was the guest Speaker. People came from as far away as Vancouver and Calgary as well as from Ottawa and other parts of Ontario to share in this special 175th. Anniversary celebration. They have provided PresbyKirk with some photos of the occasion.
